Hi Jane, Seat61 has good info:

I bought tickets in advance in 2019 for train travel in China on what is now Trip.com. I ended up changing the days of travel once I arrived in Shanghai. The main train station has several lines with English speaking windows. Try not to book trains during Chinese holidays. Extremely busy and crowded.
