Maine/Bar Harbor/NE Coast Properties
I am unfamiliar with this region - do you have any recommendations for a family wanting to do end-of-summer trip, 4 nights with their kids, ages 9 mo, 3 and 5? They want to hike and are very adventurous and active so I wondered about areas around Acadia National Park (Bar Harbor area?), but am looking for someone w/ firsthand experience, or open to other ideas! Their budget is $1k/night.

I went on a Backroads hiking trip two years ago in the fall. We spent 3 nights in Bar Harbor and one night in Camden. Lots of good places to stay. Hiking is great. Local tourism can help them as can a hotel. Lots of info on line as well. We were at a pretty upscale place called West Street Hotel which might be not a good fit for a family, but many placees around there. And, yes, it is crowded in town especially when the cruise ships come in, but otherwise not too bad.
